York Street, Leicester

When I first stepped into the rental flat on York Street, Leicester, I saw beyond the dated wallpaper and tired carpets. I envisioned a cosy, modern space that could truly feel like home. This blog documents the transformation of this flat from a worn-out rental property to a chic, comfortable sanctuary.

The Beginning: Assessing the Space

Upon taking on the rental property, I conducted a thorough assessment. The flat, though in decent structural condition, was stuck in the past with its outdated décor. The first step was to list the essential improvements needed: fresh paint, new flooring, updated fixtures, and modern furniture.

Step 1: Planning and Budgeting

Planning was crucial. I mapped out a budget and prioritized tasks. The main areas of focus were the living room, kitchen, and bathroom. I aimed for a minimalistic yet warm design, incorporating both functionality and aesthetics.

Step 2: The Living Room Transformation

The living room had potential with its large windows letting in natural light. I chose a neutral colour palette with navy blue curtains and whites to brighten the space. The old carpet was replaced with sleek wooden flooring, and I added a comfortable sofa, a stylish coffee table, and vertical radiator replacing the old tired storage radiator.

Step 3: Modernizing the Kitchen

The kitchen needed a significant overhaul. I replaced the dated cabinets with modern units in a glossy white finish. New black glass appliances were installed. A new hose type sink tap for better cleaning of the dishes.

Step 4: Refreshing the Bathroom

The bathroom was outdated but functional. To make it feel more spacious, I opted for tiled flooring and modern tiles around the bath tub. A thermostatic tap was installed to give the best of both worlds (shower and bath), a shower screen was installed, vanity sink unit, mirror, fixtures and new toilet completed the look.

Step 5: Bedroom

Finally, the bedroom was restricted for space. I had ripped out the old storage heater, this allowed a double bed to push against the window wall. The new found space gained from the bed being moved over had now allowed the bedroom door to open fully and allowed for more living space. The storage heater was replaced with a vertical mirror radiator, the vertical mirror radiator killed two birds with one stone, the room is able to efficiently heat up and with the mirror implemented in it, it allowed for the room to gain more space by having less items hanging on the wall.
